37_An Irreplaceable Person

When I look back on my life,
there are several irreplaceable people who come to mind.

I have not seen any of them for decades,
and we have long since lost touch.
However, the memories I have of them still give me
strength today.

One of them is my friend S from my junior high
and high school days.

Eventually, S dropped out of high school.
The last time I saw him was several months after
he had left school.
At that time, he and I would have been near
the end of our second year of high school.

He was riding a motorcycle with his girlfriend on the back.
We had not arranged to meet.
We simply ran into each other by chance in town.

We exchanged a few greetings,
and then they rode away.

I was on a bicycle, while they were on a motorcycle.

All I could do was watch them disappear into the distance.

When I first heard that S had dropped out of school,
I took it rather lightly and thought, “Oh, I see.”

But when I saw the two of them riding away,
I suddenly realized that we would probably not
see each other very often anymore.

That realization created a large empty space in
both my daily life and my heart.

I threw myself into studying for university entrance exams.
I really threw myself into it.

I wanted to fill that empty space.

Looking back now,
I think that was a turning point in my life.

Until then, I had never been particularly serious
about studying.
But from that moment on, I began to study with
genuine dedication.

I have so many wonderful memories with S.

The last thing he did for me was to leave my life
at a time when I needed to think seriously about my future.

Thank you, S.

I hope you are still doing well.

36_Learning and Forgetting

When facing a difficult problem, I sometimes feel that learning how to forget is important.

This is based on my own experience. When I face a difficult problem, if I cannot solve it using my usual technique, I try another one. However, sometimes I become too attached to my first technique and keep using it, even when it doesn’t work (and as a result, I end up with a poor outcome).

In such situations, I think it is better to temporarily let go of that first technique.

To begin with, I do not have many techniques. This is because I tend to stick to the first one I learn.

As a result, it becomes difficult for me to set aside a technique and learn new ones.

If I keep learning new techniques one after another and do not become too attached to any single one, I may be able to find better solutions to difficult problems.

In other words, a person who becomes too attached to a single technique may stop growing, or grow more slowly.

This idea may also apply to me.

So I would like to learn how to let go of techniques when necessary, and recall them when they are needed.

I also want to continue learning in new and unfamiliar fields.

Thank you.

35_The Role of Newspapers

I believe that some people may not
have access to television or the internet.
For such people, newspapers play
the role of providing current
news and information.
In other words, newspapers help
reduce the number of people
who cannot access up-to-date
information.

Newspapers can also be cut out
with scissors, and readers can
underline important parts.
Because of this, they can become
a kind of personal study material.

In addition, newspaper advertisements
are less intrusive compared to those
on the internet or television.
Newspapers are therefore more
suitable for maintaining
the reader’s focus.

In conclusion,
the role of newspapers is to
efficiently deliver current news
to readers.
They also contribute to spreading
news and information into
the details of society.

34_What is a rich and fulfilling life?

I believe that a rich and fulfilling
life comes from accumulating
a wide variety of experiences.

Gaining experience means
taking action.
In this sense, there are
certain psychological
factors that encourage action,
such as a sense of urgency,
feelings of inferiority,
and curiosity (A).
On the other hand, there are
psychological factors that
inhibit action, such as preconceived
notions and fixed ideas (B).

In other words,
when (A) outweighs (B),
a person is able to take
the first step forward,
which leads to a richer life.

If (B) is too strong, it can be helpful to
continue communicating with family,
friends, or a partner.

For example, if a family member
invites you to go snowboarding,
you might decide to go.
This allows you to experience
the mountains and snow firsthand.
If someone is not feeling well,
they might choose to play online
games with friends instead.
Even though it takes place in
a virtual environment,
it can still feel like traveling
abroad together with friends.

In achieving a fulfilling life,
communication with family,
friends, and partners plays
a highly important role.
It can be said that valuing human
relationships is closely connected to
living a rich life.

15_How do you change when you study?

Today I want to think about the good and the bad of studying

○Good points
1a_Your knowledge increases.
2a_You become more tolerant of what you do not
  understand.
3a_You will be able to de-emphasize when writing
4a. You will be able to consider problems from
  different directions
7a_You will be independent because you will be
equipped to solve problems and issues.
8a_You will not make unnecessary mistakes because
you will be better at making arrangements.
9a_You will increase your savings.
10a_You will have less time to be bored.
11a_You can contribute to your place of employment.
12a_12a_You have the potential to accomplish things
that others would look up to.
Because you persistently think about problems
and try to solve them again and again.
13a_Better contact between your reality and
   the reality of others.
→Because you will have more opportunities
to see for yourself how you think.
14a_You become less worldly
  (you become like a robot).
15a_You become less bitter about loneliness.

○Bad Points
1b_You judge that the more difficult the content you
are studying is, the less difficult it is for others
  to challenge you.
→For example, people who work on difficult math
problems look down on people who cook good food.
2b_You will go out less and exercise less.
→If you continue to study only, you will have fewer
friends and less habit of going out.
3b_You become fat and your physical strength,
  as well as attractiveness, declines.
4b_You are more likely to be lonely.
5b_You look down on others and feel that your
  relationships with others are worthless.
6b_You lose interest in others.
7b_You will also have a shorter lifespan.

○ Summary
I think 5b is the worst change.
You should maintain regular contact with your family, friends, and loved ones, even if you must continue
your studies.
If they contact you, you should respond in good faith.

And to study only is a long way from being happy.
Encouraging others to study is tantamount to
trying to make that person lonely.
For this reason, when you encourage others to study,
you should also suggest going out.
Example. Why don’t you study on Friday and Saturday
and go fishing on Sunday? etc.

On the other hand, if you do not study, you can live happily every day, but your status will not improve because you will not be independent.

Neither not studying at all nor studying only is good.

Maybe the secret to enjoying life is to plan days to study alone and days to go out with those close to you.
Thanks for reading this far.

14_Words to My Father

I do not consider my father a good person.
My father had a disease that made him drink too much.
I just want to remember my father in the past and think about what kind of person my father was.

My father was a man who didn’t talk much and was quiet.
Also, he always wore a coveralls.
In addition to alcohol, he smoked cigarettes.
My father preached to me only a little.

My father graduated from a local high school and went to work for a company in the city.
Then he met and married my mother and I was born.

My father seemed to like getting various driver’s licenses.
He also had special licenses that he did not use for everyday or work purposes.

I have several certifications that I don’t even use in my daily/work life as well.
I was a little surprised to notice the resemblance to
my father.

I used to think that my idea of increasing what I could do was my own.
But perhaps I got this idea from watching my father try when I was very young.

When I was in high school, my father began drinking on the job.
My mother also suffered considerable heartache.

Usually at home you can relax, but at our house there was a lot of tension.
My mother had to stop my father from drinking.
I mentioned earlier that my father was a quiet man, but not when he was inebriated.

Why did my father drink so much alcohol every day?
I could ask him myself, but I would like to speculate here.

At the very least, drinking on the job is out of the norm.
He hated his job?
Did he hate his life, which was not alternative no matter how many years he worked?
Did he want his wife and I to notice that he was hurting?

I don’t think my father and mother talked much.
I don’t remember seeing my father and mother having a pleasant chat when I was in middle and high school.
This makes me wonder why my father and mother got married.

My father didn’t talk much.
Also, my mother could not understand my father, or
Maybe she didn’t try to understand him.
If that were the case, even if my father had summoned up the courage to speak honestly to my mother about his feelings, she would not have understood, and my father would have been more alone.

I have written a long time.
I would like to summarize what kind of person
my father was.

・My father tended to be more conscious of his differences from others by obtaining a driver’s license.

Drinking alcohol while working meant that he did not value his job, and he thought he could lose his job at any time.
Of course, if he lost his job, his family would be impoverished, but he had no time to think about that.
→My father was at the end of his rope.

・My father was a very strong man.
He drank and smoked an unusual amount of alcohol, but his body never broke down.

・My father was lucky.
He was not caught driving drunk.

・My father was either kind or didn’t have the guts to speak up.
He lacked the ability to negotiate.

・My father was an unpretentious man.
He liked simplicity.

As I said at the beginning, I don’t think my father is a nice person.
But the next time I see my father, I would like to give him words of sympathy for his hardship.

09_Why don’t design and sales get along?

In my experience, design employees and sales employees often did not get along.
According to a design employee, “Sales employees just say ‘yes’ at the customer’s site.
According to a sales employee, “The designer can’t understand me.”
They belonged to the same company and should have shared company policies, but they were not united.
Today I think about the disagreement between design and sales employees.

[Reason for disagreement #1: Different sections or departments]
Because different sections or departments have a distance between the sales person and the designer, and thus, the deterioration of the relationship will not interfere with normal business operations.

[Reason for disagreement No. 2: Differences in values]
Designers are responsible for developing new technologies.
It is difficult for them to find value in people who do not develop new technologies.
For this reason, they do not make an effort to have a good relationship with salespeople, and when this relationship deteriorates, they do not try to repair it.

[Reason #3 for disagreement: lack of greeting and daily conversation]
If they are seated far from each other, there is no greeting of good morning, nor any other daily conversation.
They may misunderstand the other person’s personality in a way that is filled with their imagination.
This may make the relationship worse, but it will not make it better.

○Conclusion
I think the first step toward uniting design and sales employees is to bring their seats closer together.
If they see each other working hard and greet each other every day, they will be able to understand each other correctly.
As a result, the company’s performance will improve, salaries will increase, and work will become more enjoyable.

23_I’m not smart enough

Today, I’d like to think about
“I’m not smart enough.

Suppose Mr. A says,
“I’m not smart enough” to take this case.”
And let’s suppose that
Mr. B hears that statement.

The following can be considered about Mr. A.
・He is not interested in “this case” in the first place.
・He can imagine the difficulty of the case.
・He thinks that his own ability will never improve.
In other words, he thinks they will never grow.
・he doesn’t think it is necessary to
 improve their ability.
・he is afraid of failure.
・he doesn’t want to take responsibility.
・he wants to live comfortably.

I can think of Mr. B as follows.
・When Mr.B feels discomfort,
he believes that Mr. A can do it.
・If Mr.B feels discomfort, Mr. B is making a lot of
 effort in his daily life.
・If Mr.B feels strange, he feels that there is a right way
 to say it.

First of all,
although Mr. A says “I’m not smart enough”,
he is smart.
Because he can imagine the difficulty of this case.
So he should rephrase it as follows.

“I want to enjoy my life, so I can’t do it.
“I can’t do it because I can’t grow up.”
“I’m not interested, so I can’t do it.”

Then why did he say, “I’m not smart enough”?

There may have been an unspoken word.
“I’m not smart enough to do it (but B could do it).”
Or
“I can’t do it because I’m not smart enough (but I’ll work on something else that I’m good at).”
Etc.

Also, Mr. A will not be able to improve his income at least.
If he understands this and says it, he is evaluating himself
as already completed.

[Conclusion]
・It is difficult to interpret “I’m not smart enough”.
・I can think he said “I want to enjoy my life” in other
words, but it could also be seen as an exhortation
to those around him to get up the courage to do so.
・This phrase should be used only when
 one’s retirement is near.
・Or, it is used by those who realize that
 they are about to retire.

thanks for reading.

11. About memory

I have been thinking lately that Maybe memory is
like a geological stratum.

I sometimes unconsciously recall unpleasant or
heartwarming events that happened
many years ago.

On the other hand, I consciously recall English
and math solutions I learned years ago
while studying for certifications.

When I consciously recall the solution,
I am looking back through the strata of memory,
and I believe that my brain is unconsciously
touching on memories other than the solution.

Just now, looking back. You see so many things.
It is difficult to see only what you want to see.

In other words, I wonder that people who regularly
recall skills learned years ago are likely to regularly
recall good and bad memories from years ago.

Remembering good memories is good.
But to recall a bad memory over and over again
and be tormented by it each time is,
I would say, hell.

If we can create many good memories from
now on, there will be many opportunities to
warm our hearts in the distant future.

It’s as if I’m saving up for a memory.
I want to have no regrets every minute of
every hour of every day.
Thanks.

10_The word “decarbonization”

Today I’d like to think about the word “decarbonization” that we see so often these days.

This term relates to global warming and
greenhouse gases.
There are multiple types of greenhouse gases.
The most common of these gases is
fossil fuel-derived carbon dioxide (CO2).

The word “decarbonization” is・・・
・Remove fossil fuel-derived CO2 from the earth.
・People will move away from gasoline and kerosene , which emit CO2.
・・・that I think.

If we succeed in decarbonizing the world,
we can prevent global warming.
If it fails, global warming will continue and abnormal weather will become normal weather.

Oil and coal are used in thermal power plants.
Many people use oil stoves and gasoline vehicles.
There is probably no one who has nothing
to do with CO2 emissions.

Therefore, decarbonization is an issue that affects every corner of the world.
Decarbonization is not something that
can be achieved overnight.

Someone, somewhere, will reduce CO2 emissions.
This way of thinking should be changed.

“Decarbonization” that we see so often these days.
When I see this word, I feel like I’m being asked if
I can contribute to decarbonization.
thank you.
